Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
oxidising liquids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to other study
Principles of method if other than guideline:

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
(S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one consists for 80% of the active ingredient and for 20% of water. Water is known to be not oxidizing.
Examination of the structural formula of the active ingredient (see Figure 1) establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the substance is incapable of burning, when mixed with cellulose, at a higher or equal rate compared with the maximum burning rate of a reference mixture of cellulose and barium nitrate. The substance does contain oxygen, however, the oxygen is chemically bonded to carbon atoms.
In conclusion, (S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one has no oxidizing properties.
Executive summary:

(S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one consists for 80% of the active ingredient and for 20% of water. Water is known to be not oxidizing.
