Description of key information

In absence of any sediment test, the equilibrium partitioning method (EPM) can be applied as a first screening “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance”, Section 7.8.14 Integrated Testing Strategy for toxicity to sediment (ECHA, 2017). EPM cannot be used for all surface active substances. Nevertheless, since decan-1-ol, ethoxylated, 1-2.5EO (CAS 26183-52-8) is a non-ionic surfactant its environmental toxicity and binding properties are driven by lipophilicity. When adsorption behavior is triggered by the lipophilicity, the EPM is a suitable method. Hence the use of EPM is valid for the sediment toxicity assessment of decan-1-ol, ethoxylated, 1-2.5EO (CAS 26183-52-8).

The PEC/PNEC ratios for the sediment compartment are below one, hence a risk to sediment species is not identified and long-term sediment tests with benthic species are not required. Furthermore the substance is readily biodegradable. Therefore it can be expected that the substance will be mineralized under environmental conditions within a short time period. Long-term exposure of sediment organisms to decan-1-ol, ethoxylated, 1-2.5EO (CAS 26183-52-8) and/or degradation products of this substance is therefore unlikely.
