Description of key information

Appearance/physical state/colour

The substance is a black solid at 20°C and 1 atm.

Melting point

Considering the weight of evidence from published concordant data, the melting point temperature is considered to be 498°C.

Boiling point

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII section 7.3 a boiling point study does not need to be conducted as the melting point of the test substance is 498°C, i.e. above 300°C.

Density

The density of Copper dibromide at 20°C is 4.71 g/cm3.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

median aerodynamic diameter: 6.69 µm.

Vapour pressure

In accordance with column 2 of Reach Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII section 7.5, the vapour pressure does not need to be conducted if the melting point is above 300 degree C. The melting point of the substance was determined to be 498°C. Therefore, a study on vapour pressure is scientifically not necessary.

Partition coefficient

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII section 7.8, the test on partition coefficient n-octanol/water does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic. Copper dibromide is an inorganic substance, therefore this endpoint was waived.

For information, the theoretical calculated (EPIWIN) log Pow is 0.23, i.e. very low, as expected for an inorganic substance. Nevertheless, this value is just given as information because the prediction is outside of the applicability domain of the model since very few inorganic compounds were included in the training data set for the methodology utilized in KOWWIN v 1.68 from EPISuite software.

Water solubility

The water solubility of Cupric Bromide was stated as 1068 ± 77 g/L with the relative standard deviation of 7.2 %.

Surface tension

The study is scientifically not necessary. According to the column 2 of the annex VII section 7.6 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), the study does not need to be conducted if the surface activity is not a desired property of the material.

Flash point

According to the column 2 of the annex VII section 7.9 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is inorganic. This is the case of copper dibromide which is an inorganic substance.

In addition, the flash point is only relevant to liquids and low melting point solids. Copper dibromide is a solid with a high melting point (498°C). Therefore, flash point is not relevant in the case of copper dibromide.

Auto flammability

The melting point temperature is 498°C, which means that no self-heating of the substance occurs up to 400°C.

Flammability

Under the test conditions of an experimental study performed under GLP conditions following EU-Method A.10 and UN N.1, the test item Cupric Bromide can be considered as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) or as a non-flammable solid (for UN regulations).

Explosiveness

According to the column 2 of the annex VII section 7.11 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), the study does not need to be conducted if there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule. According to the structural formula of Copper dibromide, there are no chemical group pesent in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties. Therefore, the study is scientifically not necessary.

Oxidising properties

The test item Cupric Bromide is considered to have no oxidising properties.
