Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Due to the ionic structure under environmental relevant pH conditions, no adsorption onto the organic fraction of soil, sediments or activated sludge is expected (European Union, 2004). This is confirmed by experimental results where EDTA was almost entirely present in the form of negatively-charged complexes with alkaline earth and trace metals, and neither these complexes nor the free or protonated ligand itself adsorbed significantly on the surfaces of the solids (Gardiner, 1976). Furthermore, the low potential for adsorption is supported by the low log Pow of -3.8. The EU Risk Assessment Report further cites a study where the partition coefficients of ZnEDTA and CuEDTA were estimated in river sediments (European Union, 2004). An arithmetic mean Kpsusp of 75 L/kg resulted (38 L/kg for ZnEDTA and 113 L/kg for CuEDTA, respectively). Using the Kpsusp a log Koc of 2.88 can be calculated using the FOCsusp of 0.1 kg OC/kg solid. This log Koc was used for the derivation of PNEC sediment in order to perform the environmental exposure assessment. An additional experimental study is not considered to be necessary based on the available data.
