Details on test conditions:
Glass jars were used as test containers. 750 g of artificial soil which had been treated with one of the test chemicals (or a control with no chemicals) were placed in each jar. Ten E. fetida each with live weights of approximately 1 mg were added to each jar. There were four replicates of each chemical and dose.

Reported statistics and error estimates:
Data were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance using S.A.S. software.
The LD50 values were estimated using Trimmed Spearman–Karber Version 1.5 (S.E.P.A. Cincinnati, Ohio) designed for analysis of mortality data from acute chronic toxicity tests.

The 14 day LC50 of EDTA to earthworms (Eisenia foetida) was estimated to be 156.46 mg/kg dry weight soil.
Executive summary:

The 14 day LC50 of EDTA to earthworms (Eisenia foetida) was estimated to be 156.46 mg/kg dry weight soil.

Description of key information

LC50 (14 d) of 156.46 mg/kg soil dw (OECD 207)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Since no studies investigating the toxicity trisodium hydrogen EDTA (CAS 150-38-9) to soil macroorganisms are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to structurally related EDTA species was conducted. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Section 6.3) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

For the assessment of toxicity to terrestrial organisms data from the source substance edetic acid (CAS 60-00-4) were used.

The available study was performed according to OECD 207 (Edwards et al., 2009). Eisenia fetida was exposed to EDTA in an artificial soil. Ten species were added to each test vessel and four replicates were prepared for each concentration. Concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10.0, 100.0, 1000.0 and 10000.0 mg/kg dw were tested including a control. After 14 d the mortality at the different test vessels was recorded and a LC50 (14 d) of 156.46 mg/kg soil dw resulted.
