- PREPARATION OF THE TEST SOLUTION
Test solution was prepared freshly before the measurement: 0.42 g of the test item was measured into a 500 mL volumetric flask. It was filled up to the mark with distilled water. It was ultrasonicated for about 3 minutes, then it was equilibrated at about 20○C. The concentration of the test solution was 0.84 g/L.

Main Test
The liquid to be measured was transferred to the measurement vessel (with a diameter of about 6.5 cm). The measurement vessel was placed on the sample table. The sample was raised until the ring is 1-2 mm above the surface of the liquid. Then the test was started and the measurement vessel was raised until the ring was immersed below the surface of the solution to be measured. In order to describe the time dependence of the surface tension after transferring the solution to the measurement vessel, the measurement was continued with increasing equilibrium time (= time after transferring the solution to the vessel until measuring the surface tension of the solution) until a constant surface tension value was reached. A constant surface tension value was reached within about 6 minutes. Afterwards, four further measurements were performed each after a minimum equilibrium time in order to confirm the value obtained by the first measurement. The results were fully consistent, so 5 measurements were considered to be sufficient.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- The determination of the surface tension was carried out on the test item, with the use of a Krüss K11 Tensiometer by ring method. The value was found to be 72.9 mN/m at 20°C ± 0.5°C. As the surface tension value was higher than 60 mN/m, sodium [(6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-7-yl)oxy]acetate is classified as a non-surface active substance.
- Executive summary:
The surface tension of the test item aqueous solution read on the instrument was 72.0 mN/m at 20°C ± 0.5°C using the ring method representing the mean of five measurements. The measured values were corrected with Harkins-Jordan correction factor.
The measured surface tension was multiplied by resulting in a corrected surface tension of 72.9 mN/m.
As the surface tension value was higher than 60 mN/m,sodium [(6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-7-yl)oxy]acetate is classified as a non-surface active substance.
Age of solution used was about 6 hours which is the time between preparation and measurement of the solution.
