Description of key information

Reaction product of tin, citric acid and nitric acid is a very acidic aqueous solution (ph < 1). A pH correction would change the nature of the substance, which is deemed to be stable only at this pH level. Therefore, an adsorption/desorption study according to OECD Guideline No. 106, which should be conducted with soils at a pH range of < 4.5 - >7.5, is technically not feasible. On the other hand, also according to section 1 of Annex XI of EC No. 1907/2006, such a test is considered scientifically not necessary since sufficient information is available to assess the endpoint. At circumneutral pH the substance decomposes to tin dioxide, nitrate and citric acid. Citric acid is expected to have a low potential for adsorption, based on a Log Pow of -1.72 (source: OECD SIDS Citric acid, UNEP Publications, January 2001). Nitrate, as anion, is not expected to adsorb onto soil as well. Reliable partition coefficients of tin in soil are available from literature. Mean Kd-valuefrom 142 samples covering 4 different soil groups is 12400 L/kg (Log Kd: 4.09).
