Description of key information

Reaction product of tin, citric acid and nitric acid is a very acidic aqueous solution (ph < 1). A pH correction would change the nature of the substance, which is deemed to be stable only at this pH level. At circumneutral pH the substance decompose to tin dioxide and nitrate (inorganic substances for which biodegradation does not apply) and citric acid, which is the only organic component of the substance.

Citric acid (CAS No. 77 -92 -9) is known to be rapidly degraded in both sewage works and surface waters as well as in soil (Reference: OECD SIDS Initial Assessment Report for citric acid, UNEP Publications, 2000).

In conclusion, a screening test on readily biodegradation of reaction product of tin, citric acid and nitric acid is considered to be not scientifically justified.
