Description of key information

LC50 (96h) on fish = 2.5 mg/l

NOEC (48h) in aquatic invertebrates = 100 mg/l

EC50 (7d) based on frond number growth rate in aquatic plants = 47.886 mg/l

Additional information

Basic Brown 022 was tested for aquatic toxicity according to:

- OECD guideline 203 in fish. Fish was found to be the most sensitive species; this finding was confirmed in 2 studies, using test samples with different dye content (94 % and 17 %).

- OECD guideline 202 in aquatic invetebrates. The test was run as a limit tests and showed no effects at the limit concentration of 100 mg/l.

- OECD guideline 221 in aquatic plants. Concentration-related effects were seen.

Justification for classification or non classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), classification categories for hazardous to the aquatic environment are as follows:

Acute (short-term) aquatic hazard - Category Acute 1:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l.

Substances for which adequate chronic toxicity data are not available - Category Chronic 1:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l.

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log Kow ≥ 4).

Category Chronic 2:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log K ow ≥ 4).

Category Chronic 3:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l.

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log K ow ≥ 4).

Based on available experimental data, fish appeared as the most sensitive species, with an LC50 (96h) between 1 and 10. Accordingly, Basic Brown 022 is not classified for acute toxicity, while it is classified for chronic toxicity as Category Chronic 2 (H411) within the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).
