melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Testing was conducted between 26 January 2017 and 13 July 2017.
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
according to guideline
other: ASTM D3418
Version / remarks:
Equipment: PerkinElmer Pyris 1, Closed-cup
GLP compliance:
Other quality assurance:
ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories)
Type of method:
other: Method ASTM D3418
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Sponsor´s identification: Tar, pinus sylvestris.
Description: Black, slightly thick but flowing solution, homogenous, typical wood tar odor.
Storage conditions: Room temperature
Key result
Melting / freezing pt.:
ca. -20 °C
Remarks on result:
not determinable
Melting point was < -20 ˚C.
Executive summary:

The test method consists of heating or cooling the test material at a controlled rate in a specified purge gas (nitrogen) at a controlled flow rate and continuously monitoring with a thermometer the difference in temperature or the difference in heat input between a reference material and a test material due to energy changes in the material. Melting point was < -20 ˚C.

Description of key information

The study does not need to be conducted below a lower limit of - 20 °C. The melting point and crystallization temperature was carried out using ASTM D3418 method: Transition Temperatures and Enthalpies of Fusion and Crystallization of Polymers by Differential Scanning Calorimetry. The results of the test material was found to be less than -20 Celsius degrees.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
-20 °C
