Description of key information

Pinene oligomers are widely used, both directly and as a co-formulant with pesticides, for spray application to agricultural crops, in horticulture and for general protection of vegetation from excessive water loss. As co-formulant, they provide a spreader/sticker function and when sprayed alone they protect by antitranspirant action. No phytotoxic activity has been reported and none would be expected given the close chemical analogy to phytoterpenes produced endogenously in most plant types.
Three key studies are reported, showing beneficial and no adverse effects after spray application to orange trees, grapevines and cereal crops wheat and barley).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Direct spray application to plant surfaces at concentrations in the range 1 -3% produced no evidence of phytotoxic action.
