The aquatic toxicity was studied in an acute immobilization test with Daphnia magna according to test guideline OECD 202. The daphnids were exposed over 48 hours to 5 concentrations of the test substance between 2.8 and 29.8 mg/L, measured by TOC analysis and a control. There was a concentration related immobilization. The EC50/24h of aldona was higher than 29.8 mg/L, the EC50/48 hours was determined with 26.9 mg/L. The NOEC/48h was 16.6 mg/L, the LOEC/48h was 29.8 mg/L. The study was conducted according to GLP (see Schering report no. A03236).

The aquatic toxicity of aldona was also studied in a algal growth inhibition test with the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum according to the test guideline OECD 201. The algae were incubated with the test compound over a period of 72 hours in 5 concentrations between 3.2 and 33.8 mg/L, measured by TOC analysis, and a control. In the highest concentration, the griwth rate was significantly reduced, although less than 50%. Therefore, the ErC50/72h was higher than 33.8 mg/L, the NOEC was 18.8 mg/L, the LOEC 33.8 mg/L. The study was conducted according to GLP (see Schering report no. A03237)
