Hydroxylamine is a crystalline substance that is highly soluble in water. Hydroxylamine may occur as different chemical species dependent on pH (see also Chapter 4.21). Due to the inorganic character of Hydroxylamine biodegradation testing is not applicable. Hydroxylamine (free base) is stable in pure water in the absence of oxygen. However, the substance is a strong reduction agent and in the presence of oxygen, metals and other ions is rapidly transformed by abiotic processes (Hollemann-Wiberg, 1995). The ultimative transformation products are ammonium, nitrogen and N2O. The reaction is dependent on the pH. The more basic the environment, the more rapid the transformation.

Since hydroxylamine is an inorganic substance dissociating in water, it is not reliable to estimate the distribution using a Mackay-type model. Taking into account the inorganic character of hydroxylamine and its high solubility in water, a complete distribution to the aqueous compartment can be expected. Adsorption to organic matter and volatilization is negligible. No accumulation in organisms and the food chain is expected.
