Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusion on classification

Classification related key information (based on current available information)

Degradation:

-         Biodegradation: readily biodegradable: > 72% after 30 d (O2 consumption, OECD 301D)

Bioaccumulation:

-         Log Pow = 3.05 (Hansch, 1995)

Aquatic acute toxicity:

-         Fish: LC50 (96 h) = 22 mg/L (nominal, mortality of Lepomis macrochirus, EPA-method 1975)

-         Aquatic invertebrates: EC50 (48 h) > 21 mg/L (meas. geom. mean, mobility of Daphnia magna, OECD 202); RA CAS 334-48-5

-         Algae: EC50 (72 h) = 43.73 mg/L (meas., growth rate, OECD 201)

Aquatic chronic toxicity

-         Fish: NOEC (28 d) = 6.4 mg/L (nominal, growth rate of Danio rerio, OECD 305 E); RA CAS 629-25-4

-         Aquatic invertebrates: NOEC (21 d) = 0.2 mg/L (nominal, reproduction rate of Daphnia magna, OECD 211); RA CAS 334-48-5

-         Algae: NOEC (72 h) = 17.52 mg/L (meas., growth rate, OECD 201)

Conclusion on classification

A harmonized classification towards environmental hazard was adopted for octanoic acid. According to the regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, Annex VI, Table 3.1 the substance is classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment, aquatic chronic 3: harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H412). This corresponds with the available data presented in this dossier, a further self classification is not needed.
