SCP liquor showed only low acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.

Two SCP liquors were tested (key studies) for toxicity to Daphnia magna. Exact EC50 (48 h) values could not be derived due to the sample properties (probably the interference of poorly water soluble fraction), but the values varied between >100 and >400 mg/l, which are above the highest classification criterion (100 mg/l) for the aquatic acute toxicity. The given NOEC values hold uncertainty because of some random immobilisation of Daphnias showing no dose response.

The EC50 (48 h) value (ca. 11000 mg/l) for D. magna of a supportive study (Grahn & Grotell 2004) was much higher, which was probably due to a more dilute sample according to the dry matter content of the SCP liquor tested in the study.

Because of the low number of SCP liquor studies, some SCP effluent studies were refered as endpoint studies with Weight of evidence status.

Based on EC50 (48 h) values for D. magna the SCP effluents showed also low toxicity. However, these results are only indicative as SCP effluents contain also other process water in addition to spent liquor.
