Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusion on classification

Cashew Nutshell Extract, Decarboxylated, Distilled (Distilled Grade) has a low water solubility (0.3 mg/l), a high log Kow of 6.2, a low vapour pressure (0.00005 Pa at 25oC) and is readily biodegradable.Short-term toxicity tests on algae and fish using the structurally similar substance Technical Grade indicated that there were no toxic effects at the water solubility limit. In a 21-dayDaphnia magnaReproduction Test no effects on reproduction, parental mortality and growth were evident in daphnids exposed to Water Soluble Fractions (WSFs) prepared at any of the loading rates between 1.0 to 10 mg/l. On the basis of the analytical data the 21-day No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was below the water solubility limit and equates to a value of 0.114 mg/l (113.5 µg/l) based on the measured concentrations of the three forms of cardanol. In a Bioaccumulation in Fish study the individual BCF values obtained for the four cardanol components in the UVCB, both before and after lipid normalisation, were below the threshold value of 2000 L/kg in all cases. On this basis the test substance is not considered to be bioaccumulative. According to the GHS, Cashew Nutshell Extract, Decarboxylated, Distilled (Distilled Grade) is classified as Long-Term (Chronic) Aquatic Hazard Category 3 Chronic 3 for rapidly degradable substances for which there are adequate toxicity data available. This results in Aquatic Hazard Classification H412 ‘Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects’
