Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

To assess the toxicity of CAS 16040 -69 -0 to aquatic invertebrates, read across was performed to structural analogue phtalocyanines.

The effect of the similar Phthalocyanines CAS 147-14-8 and 1328-53-6 on the respiration rate of activated, domestic sludge was tested by a study following ISO 8192 and OECD guideline 209 respectively (BASF AG 1988, Huntington Research Centre Ltd. 1988). For CAS 147-14-8 an EC20 of CA 750 mg/l was determined after 30 min. whereas in CAS 1328-53-6 an EC50 >10000 mg/l after 30 minutes as well as after 3 hours was detected.

Furthermore the toxicity of the analogue CAS 147-14-8 to a single bacteria species i.e. Pseudomonas putida was tested. All tests followed German standard DIN 38412 part 27. The bacterium was exposed to the substance for 30 minutes and changes in the respiration rate were recorded. Two studies determined an EC10 >10000 mg/l and an EC10 of 8300 mg/l (EC50 >10000 mg/l) respectively (BASF AG 1987, 1988). In third study an EC50 of 190 mg/l was recorded. However, the test was performed using a solubiliser. The solubility of CAS 1328-53-6 was also increased by a solubiliser in a test on the respiration rate of P. putida. The test was performed according to DIN 38412 part 27 and an EC50 >10000 after 30 minutes was determined.
