Additional information

Acute fish, Daphnia and algal results are available for terpenes and terpenoids, turpentine oil, alpha-pinene fraction, oligomers. The LL50/EL50 values for terpenes and terpenoids, turpentine oil, alpha-pinene fraction, oligomers for toxicity to fish,Daphnia, and algae were all >100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Conclusion on classification

The LL50/EL50 values for terpenes and terpenoids, turpentine oil, alpha-pinene fraction, oligomers for toxicity to fish, Daphnia, and algae were all >100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

As all of the EL50 values are above 100 mg/L an acute environmental classification is not assigned to terpenes and terpenoids, turpentine oil, alpha-pinene fraction oligomers under the CLP regulation. Although no effects were observed in acute studies at the limit of solubility of the test item, a Chronic category 4 ‘safety net’ classification is considered to be appropriate for this substance as the substance has a log Kow ≥4 and is poorly soluble and not readily biodegradable. Therefore, a Chronic Category 4 classification is assigned under the CLP regulation.

Under the DSD a classification of R53 is appropriate as the substance is poorly soluble, not readily biodegradable and has a log Kow >3.
