First-aid measures

Remove contaminated clothing. First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety.

If inhaled:

Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention. If breathing difficulties develop, aid in breathing and seek immediate medical attention.

On skin contact:

Immediately wash thoroughly with plenty of water, apply sterile dressings, consult a skin specialist.

On contact with eyes:

In case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately for at least 15 minutes with plenty of water. Immediate medical attention required.

On ingestion:

Rinse mouth immediately and then drink plenty of water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention. Administer 50 ml of pure ethanol in a drinkable concentration.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Symptoms: Eye irritation, skin irritation, disturbance of vision, irritation of respiratory tract, liver damage, Further symptoms are possible

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treatment: Symptomatic treatment (decontamination, vital functions). Adminstration of ethanol resp. 4-methylpyrazole.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

water spray, dry powder

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Risk of bursting.

Advice for fire-fighters

Special protective equipment:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Further information:

Vapours are heavier than air and may accumulate in low areas and travel a considerable distance up to the source of ignition. Sealed containers should be protected against heat as this results in pressure build-up. Keep people away and stay on the upwind side. Burns with a green flame and produces a dense white smoke.

Accidental release measures

Release of substance/product can cause fire or explosion.

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Use personal protective clothing. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear.

Environmental precautions

Do not empty into drains.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Pick up with suitable absorbent material. Place into suitable container for disposal. Correctly dispose of recovered product immediately.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of dusts/mists/vapours. Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas.

Protection against fire and explosion:

Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Render equipment and apparatus inert (nitrogen, inert gases) and ground before putting into operation. Use antistatic tools. Do not expose container to direct sunlight.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Keep away from water. Segregate from acids and bases. Segregate from oxidants.

Further information on storage conditions: Store in unopened original containers in a cool and dry place. Keep container tightly closed. Protect from atmospheric humidity.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control parameters

Components with workplace control parameters

67-56-1: methanol

TWA value 260 mg/m3 ; 200 ppm (OEL (EU))

indicative

Skin Designation (OEL (EU))

The substance can be absorbed through the skin.

Exposure controls

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection:

Breathing protection if gases/vapours are formed. Combination filter for gases/vapours of organic compounds and solid and liquid particles (f.e. EN 14387 Type A-P2)

Hand protection:

Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374)

Suitable materials short-term contact and/or splashes (recommended: At least protective index 2, corresponding > 30 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374)

butyl rubber (butyl) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

nitrile rubber (NBR) - 0.4 mm coating thickness

fluoroelastomer (FKM) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing.

Manufacturer's directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types.

Eye protection:

Tightly fitting safety goggles (splash goggles) (e.g. EN 166)

Body protection:

Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust).

General safety and hygiene measures

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of vapour. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Hands and/or face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

When heated can give off ignitable vapours.

Chemical stability

The product is stable if stored and handled as prescribed/indicated.

Possibility of hazardous reactions

Exothermic reaction.

Conditions to avoid

Avoid moisture. Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame.

Incompatible materials

Substances to avoid:

water, acids, bases, oxidizing agents

Hazardous decomposition products:

methanol, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide

boron oxides

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations.

Contaminated packaging:

Keep under nitrogen pressure and return to supplier as soon as possible.
