Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

STABILITY

Phototransformation in air

Half-life ranged from 15.5 to 46.4 hours, at different test conditions. The most conservative value was selected.

The overall degradation rate constant with OH radicals was estimated 7.18E-7 cm3/(molecule-day).

Hydrolysis

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex VIII - Section 9.2.2.1 Column 2, hydrolysis as a function of pH does not need to be determined as the substance can be regarded as readily biodegradable.

BIODEGRADATION

A screening test of ready biodegradability of malic acid indicates that the substance is expected to be readily biodegradable, thus in accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC (Annex IX - 9.2.1.2, 9.2.1.3, 9.2.1.4 - column 2) simulation tests of biodegradation in water, sediment and soil do not need to be conducted.

BIOACCUMULATION

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex IX - Section 9.3.2 Column 2, a study of bioaccumulation need not be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (based on a Log Kow <3).

TRANSPORT AND DISTRIBUTION

Adsorption / desorption

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex VIII - Section 9.3.1 Column 2, an adsorption/desorption screening test does not need to be conducted because, based on its physicochemical properties, malic acid can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption.

Henry's Law constant

The Henry's Law constant value of 1.01E-7 Pa m³/mole indicates that the substance is essentially non-volatile from water.
