Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water : screening tests

From the 2 authoritative source of information and using the weight of evidence approach; 2-nitro-p-toluidine was found to be 50% biodegradable in water in 5 h with mean degradation rate of 0.14 h-1. 2-nitro-p-toluidine is estimated to be 50% biodegradable in water in 38 days (half life). This value indicates that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is readily biodegradable in water.

Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Based on the Level III Fugacity Model, the half life period of the 2-nitro-p-toluidine was estimated. The half period of 2-nitro-p-toluidine in water is 38 days (912 hrs) therefore it is considered that the substance will qualify as not persistent as the half life does not exceed the threshold of 60 days. So, it can be confirmed that the substance is readily biodegradable in water medium where as in sediment the half life is 340 days (8160 hrs).

Based on this value, it can be inferred that the substance is persistent in sediment medium and is not readily biodegradable probably due to the anaerobic conditions existing in most sediments.

Biodegradation in soil

The PBT Profiler & EPI Suite has estimated that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is expected to be found predominantly in soil and its persistence estimate is based on its availability in this medium. Its half-life in soil, 75 days (1800 hrs). This exceeds the threshold of >= 2 months (and <= 6 months). Therefore, 2-nitro-p-toluidine is estimated to be persistent in the soil environment.
