Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with calcium dibenzoate are not available, thus aquatic toxicity will be addressed with existing data on the dissociation products.

Calcium

Calcium as an essential element has a very low potential for toxicity to freshwater and saltwater organisms and adverse effects are lacking up to and including the respective OECD/EC guidelines limit concentrations.

Benzoic acid

Acute (short-term) toxicity:

Reliable acute aquatic toxicity data of benzoic acid are available from guideline studies for algae, daphnia, fish and microorganisms. The lowest respective EC/LC50 values are as follows:

EC50 - algae: 33.1 mg/L

EC50 -daphnia: > 100 mg/

LC50 - fish: 44.6 mg/L

EC50 - microorganisms: > 1000 mg/L

The lowest EC50 value was derived for algae with 33.1 mg/L. In sum, benzoic acid has a low potential for acute toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Chronic (long-term) toxicity:

Reliable chronic aquatic toxicity data are available from guideline studies for algae, daphnia, fish and microorganisms. The lowest respective EC10/NOEC values are as follows:

72 h EC10 - algae: 3.4 mg/L

21 d NOEC - daphnia: 25 mg/L

28 d NOEC - fish: 120 mg/L

3 h NOEC - microorganisms: >= 1000 mg/L

The lowest EC10 value was derived for algae with 3.4 mg/L. In sum, benzoic acid has a low potential for chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Calcium dibenzoate

Using existing aquatic toxicity data of the dissociation products of calcium dibenzoate, the aquatic hazard assessment is based on the most toxic moiety, i.e. the benzoate anion. Existing aquatic toxicity data of benzoic acid are recalculated for calcium dibenzoate based on a maximum benzoate content of 85.8 %.

Acute (short-term) toxicity:

Reliable acute aquatic toxicity data are available from guideline studies for algae, daphnia, fish and microorganisms. The lowest respective EC/LC50 values are as follows:

EC50 - algae: 38.6 mg/L

EC50 -daphnia: > 116.6 mg/

LC50 - fish: 52.0 mg/L

3 h EC50 - microorganisms: > 1165.5 mg/L

The lowest EC50 value was derived for algae with 38.6 mg/L. In sum, calcium dibenzoate has a low potential for acute toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Chronic (long-term) toxicity:

Reliable chronic aquatic toxicity data are available from guideline studies for algae, daphnia, fish and microorganisms. The lowest respective EC10/NOEC values are as follows:

72 h EC10 - algae: 3.96 mg/L

21 -d NOEC - daphnia: 29.1 mg/L

28 -d NOEC - fish: 139.9 mg/L

3 h NOEC - microorganisms: >= 1165.5 mg/L

The lowest EC10 value was derived for algae with 3.96 mg/L. In sum, calcium dibenzoate has a low potential for chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms.
