Description of key information

Based on the available data, substances in the category Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts would not be considered readily biodegradable.

Additional information

Reliable studies are available for several members of this category. The studies were all GLP-compliant and conducted to standard guidelines. A study conducted with Fatty acids, tall oil, oligomeric reaction products with maleic anhydride and rosin, calcium magnesium salts demonstrated that this substance achieved 63% degradation after 28 days (Harlan 2010). It would be considered readily biodegradable but failing the 10 -day window. In a study with the test substance Rosin, fumarated, reaction products with formaldehyde; 26% degradation was demonstrated after 28 days (Harlan 2010). This would not be considered readily biodegradable. In a study with Rosin, fumarated the test item achieved ca. 15% degradation after 28 days (Water Quality Institute 1993). Again this would not be considered readily biodegradable. Inveresk (2002) conducted a study that demonstrated ca.0.34% degradation after 29 days for Rosin, maleated and ca.18.92% degradation after 29 days for Rosin, fumarated / maleated. Neither of these substances would be considered readily biodegradable on the basis of these results. Based on the test results for members of this category, substances in the category Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts would not be considered readily biodegradable.
