Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance:

The substance TBPIB is a colourless organic liquid at 20 °C and 1013 hPa.

Melting point:

The freezing point of tert-Butylperoxyisobutyrate (TBPIB) is expected to be lower than -20°C. This temperature evaluation was based on a study that examined the stability of TBPIB to coldness, showing no crystallization at -25°C. Therefore freezing temperature below -25°C was expected.

Boiling point:

TBPIB decomposes before boiling. Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) of the substances is 30°C (reference SADT: CLP regulations 2.15.2.3 and UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition, sub-sections 28.1, 28.2, 28.3 and Table 28.3).

Density:

Using the pycnometer method, the density of tert-Butylperoxyisobutyrate (TBPIB) 75 % in isododecan was determined to be 0.861 g/cm³ at 20 +/- 0.2 °C.

Vapour pressure:

At temperatures between 37°C to 75°C vapour pressures between 5.04 to 44.71 mBar were measured for tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate (TBPIB).

Partition coefficient:

The log Pow of TBPIB is determined to be 2.68 +/- 0.005 (with 95 % confidence interval). The estimated Pow was 483 +/- 5.5 (with 95 % confidence interval).

Water Solubility:

The water solubility of TBPIB was determined to be 3.96 +/- 0.42 g/L (95 % confidence interval) at 20 °C +/- 0.5 °C using the flask method for the performance of the main test. Thus, TBPIB was considered to be soluble.

Flash point:

The Self - Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate (TBPIB) was determined to be 30°C (see study in IUCLID section 4.23). It is therefore expected that the substance will be decomposed before the flash point is reached (CLP regulations 2.15.2.3 and UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition, sub-sections 28.1, 28.2, 28.3 and Table 28.3 and ECHA guidance on the application of the CLP criteria, section 2.14). Thus, a study that determines the flash point is not required.

Oxidizing properties:

Test is not applicable for organic peroxides. In the CLP regulations Organic peroxides are not oxidizers. They are classified in a distinct hazard class. See also ECHA guidance on the application of the CLP criteria, section 2.14.

Viscosity:

The viscosity (dynamic viscosity) of the test susbstance tert-butylperoxyisobutyrate (TBPIB) 75 % in isododecane was examined by an Ubbelohde viscometer in three separate measurements at 20°C. An average of the time measured (the time it takes for the liquid to pass between two marked points) was considered for the viscosity calculation. Thus, the viscosity result obtained for TBPIB 75 % in isododecane was 1.4 mPAS.
