Description of key information

The hydrolys is of tert-butyl peroxy isobutyrate in different aqueous buffer solutions (pH = 4, 7and9) at 15, 37 and 50 °C was investigated using HPLC-UV. Measurements revealed a fast hydrolysis of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate. On the basis of retention times both potential hydrolysis products (tert-butyl hydroperoxide and isobutyricacid) were identified in stored buffer solutions at pH = 7 and pH = 9.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
2 901 h
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The hydrolysis of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate and the identification of the decomposition products was assessed in accordance with the OECD guideline 111 and the EU method C.7. The hydrolysis of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate in different aqueous buffer solutions (pH = 4, 7 and 9) at 15, 37 and 50 °C was investigated using HPLC-UV. Measurements revealed a fast hydrolysis of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate. On the basis of retention times both potential hydrolysis products (tert-butyl hydroperoxide and isobutyric acid) were identified in stored buffer solutions at pH = 7 and pH = 9. Applying Arrhenius equation the rate constant and half-live at pH = 4, 7 and 9 were calculated at 20 and 25°C. The half-life at pH = 4, 7 and 9 at 20 °C were determined to be 1224 hours, 8092 hours and 96 hours, respectively. The half-life at pH = 4, 7 and 9 at 25 °C were determined to be 781 hours, 2901 hours and 52 hours, respectively. It could be shown that the hydrolysis of tert-butyl peroxyisobutyrate was dependent from the pH and the temperature of the aqueous media. The degradation products (tert-butyl hydroperoxide and isobutyric acid) were successfully identified using HPLC.
