Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Additional information

Silica fume is inorganic substance and not biodegradable. Therefore it is not relevant to speak about true biodegradation in the context of environmental hazard assessment of silica. Dissolved silica (as Si(OH)4) is still subject to biologically mediated processes leading to transformations of biologically absorbed silica. In biological processes Si is not known (reliable reported) to be associated covalently to organic molecules (Craig, 1986). Regarding the information requirements and testing, biodegradability testing is not relevant for this substance (ANNEX VII-X, sections Ready biodegradability, simulation tests in surface water, soil and sediments).
