Description of key information

The reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid is not flammable (in contact with water) and has no pyrophoric properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Flammability (contact with water)
The chemical structure of the reaction product of the reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid does not contain chemical groups, capable of causing the development of a dangerous amount of (flammable) gas (e.g. hydrogen), when in contact with damp air or water. Therefore test substance is not considered highly flammable (contact with water).

Pyrophoric properties

From the structural formula of the reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid it can be concluded that the test substance is not pyrophoric. The reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid does not contain any chemical group that might lead to spontaneous ignition shortly after coming into contact with air at room temperature. In addition, from experience in handling and use no ignition in contact with air is expected.

Flammability (solids)
The determination of the flammability according to EU Method A.10 is not applicable as this method refers only to solid substances but the reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid is a liquid.
Flammability (liquids) The reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid is not classified as flammable liquid because of it having a flaspoint of more than 60
°C. The flashpoint of reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid was determined to be higher than 200 °C. (see IUCLID Section 4.11: Key.001.Flash point.AQura GmbH.2012).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on considerations of the molecular structure of the reaction product of oleyl alcohol with polyphosphoric acid with respect to flammability

(not flammable), the liquid test substance is not classified according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation /EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
