Pharmacokinetics and Body Distribution of Liposomal Zinc Phthalocyanine in Tumor-Bearing Mice: Influence of Aggregation State, Particle Size, and Composition (Isele U, et al 1995) Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Vol. 84, No. 2, February 1995

Upon intravenous administration, the dye is transported by lipoproteins [specifically, low-density lipoproteins (LDL)) to tumor tissues rich in lipoprotein receptors which internalize the dye-LDL complex by means of receptor-mediated endocytosis. After selective irradiation of the (epithelial) tumor with a laser light of the same wavelength as the absorption maximum of the dye, the ZnPc decomposes and the oxygen radicals formed in this photoactivation process kill the tumor cells. This so-called photodynamic therapy is being explored with hematoporphyrin as a photosensitizer in man for treatment of tumors of the esophagus, stomaeh, bladder, lung, skin, eye, and brain.
