Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 2019-10-30 to 2019-12-20
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
2015
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Batch No.: 190722
Purity: > 99 wt%
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
other: No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed.

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test item pile. The test item glowed, clumped, burned with a blue flame and turned into a white residue with black particles. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished directly and no propagation of combustion was observed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered ‘not flammable’.
Executive summary:

The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of test item based on UN Test N.1.

No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered ‘not flammable’.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 2019-10-30 to 2019-12-20
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Version / remarks:
2016
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Batch No.: 190722
Purity: > 99 wt%
Key result
Test procedure:
step 1
step 2
step 3
step 4
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed
Remarks:
No evolution of a gas and/or spontaneous ignition of the test item in contact with water was observed in Test 1, Test 2, Test 3 and Test 4.
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.
Executive summary:

The full test was performed to monitor the reactivity of test item in contact with water according to EC A. 12.

No evolution of a gas and/or spontaneous ignition of the test item in contact with water was observed in Test 1, Test 2, Test 3 and Test 4.

In conclusion, the test item is ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Flammability:

The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of test item based on UN Test N.1.

The test item is considered ‘not flammable’.

Substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases:

The full test was performed to monitor the reactivity of test item in contact with water according to EC A. 12. The test item is ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.

Pyrophoric solids:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Flammable solids:

UN Test N.1, No propagation of combustion of the test substance along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed.

Therefore in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.7.2.1, this substance should not be classified as flammable solids.

Flammability in contact with water:

EC A12, No evolution of a gas and/or spontaneous ignition of the test substance in contact with water was observed in Test 1, Test 2, Test 3 and Test 4.

Therefore, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.12.2.2, the substance is not classified as a substance which in contact with water emits flammable gases.

Pyrophoric solids:

The substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days).

Therefore, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.10.4., the classification procedure for pyrophoric solids need not be applied.
