Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
August 13, 2003
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
(1992)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
other: The substance does ignite but does not propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering.

The test material melted, producing a liquid that ignited. However, this flame did not propogate.

Interpretation of results:
other: not classified based on GHS or CLP criteria
Conclusions:
In a GLP-compliant study performed in accordance with EC A.10, the substance has been determined to be 'not highly flammable' by ignition. The UN MTC N.1 flammability test has not been performed but is essentially the same as the EC A.10 test in case no (propagation of) combustion occurs in the preliminary test. In such a case a wetted zone (applied in the N.1 test) is of no relevance and the EC A.10 test result can be used for CLP classification. The substance is concluded to be not a flammable solid.
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
In accordance with EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with water)) and Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria (UN no. ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.4), the study Flammability (contact with water) does not need to be conducted as the substance does not contain chemical groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas. Moreover, practical experience demonstrated that the substance does not ignite spontaneously in contact with water, for instance, during the determination of the water solubility.
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
In accordance with EU Method A.13 (Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids) and Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria (UN no. ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.4), the study Flammability in contact with air (Pyrophoric Properties) does not need to be conducted as it was demonstrated that the substance does not ignite in contact with air when handled under normal laboratory conditions during the determination of its physico-chemical properties.

Description of key information

Not a flammable solid (EC A.10: preliminary screening test).

No pyrophoric properties (based on experience in handling and structural features).

Not highly flammable in contact with water (based on experience in handling and structural features).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification or non-classification according to CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008:

Not a flammable solid (negative in EC A.10)

Not a pyrophoric solid (the substance lacks functional groups that would imply this hazard)

No classification for the hazard "Substances which in contact with water emits flammable gases' (the substance lacks functional groups that would imply this hazard)

Since no UN Test N.4 is available, CLP classification for self-heating is not possible.
