Hazardous to the aquatic environment (acute)

Iodine is subject to harmonised classification (Index number 053-001-00-3) under Regulation 1272/2008 as acute toxicity category 1. This is supported by a 72-h EC50of 0.13 mg/L on algae (Vryenhoef and Mullee, 2010).

Hazardous to the aquatic environment (chronic)

Iodine is a natural ubiquitously present essential trace element. It is highly mobile and cycles through all environmental compartments via a range of mechanisms including disproportionation to different oxidation states by abiotic and biotic mechanisms coupled with binding to organic matrices and biological organisms. These act to significantly mediate the aquatic toxicity when compared to laboratory conditions. Thus, it is not being classified.
