Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The substance is considered as ready biodegradable. Tests on the ready biodegradability of the substance are not available. The data on ready biodegradability are therefore based on a study conducted with the structural analog substance glyoxal (CAS 107-22-2). The substance is characterised by comparable physio-chemical properties e.g. water solubility, a low log Pow and log koc.

Glyoxal is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (BASF, 1996). The test substance was degraded by 90 -100 % in a study on the ready biodegradability conducted according to OECD guideline 301A (BASF AG, 1996).

In a study following OECD guideline 302 B the inherent biodegradability of the substance was investigated. The test was conducted with industrial sludge. Based on DOC removal a degradation rate of 85 % was recorded after 6 days inoculation time.
