Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

4 -Vinylpyridine was used in early studies of the murine LLNA, and was evaluated as positive. Older data from guinea pig sensitisation tests demonstrated sensitisation.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
4VP is a dermal sensitiser. There is no data on respiratory sensitisation, Risk management measures as recommended will protect workers from sensitising effects of this substance.

Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
4-Vinylpyridine dermal exposure resulted in increased lymphocyte proliferation in the LLNA protocol, and sensitization when tested in guinea pig protocols.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available
Additional information:

No data on respiratory sensitisation.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
No data on respiratory sensitisation. As 4VP is also corrosive, risk management measures are recommended which will protect workers from inhalative exposures.

Justification for classification or non-classification

4-Vinylpyridine is classified as sensitising; protective clothing, goggles and gloves are recommended to minimize skin contact. These risk management measures also suffice to protect against skin corrosion properties. 4VP is required to be classified as corrosive to the respiratory tract. The risk management measures associated with this risk will accommodate any risk for respiratory sensitisation.
