Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

For manufacturing equipment design the viscosity of aluminium tri-sec-butanolate has been determined in the temperature range of 0 - 100 °C (calibration range 0 - 80 °C). The dynamic viscosity of the substance was determined by a rotational viscosimeter using an MK 20 cone, applying a constant shear rate (d gamma/dt) of 100 per second. The dynamic viscosity of aluminium tri-sec-butanolate at 20 °C was found being 2660 mPa*s, and 791 mPa*s at 40 °C, respectively.

However, the viscosity of liquids according to REACH Guidance 7a, section 7.1.18 may be relevant for two reasons:
- penetration of fluids into soil and groundwater and
- aspiration hazards in humans resulting potentially in pneumonitis.
As aluminium tri-secondary-butylate is hydrolytically unstable, reacting directly with moisture in air or any protic solvent such as water to form aluminium hydroxides and 2-butanol, the use of the viscosity data, determined for the purpose of handling the substance in dry atmosphere under inert gas (as in production), is of no use to assess behaviour of the substance in the environment or for assessment of potential pneumonitis.
