Description of key information

A NOAEL value of 10 mg/L was reported for the chronic toxicity of glutaraldehyde 50% to Daphnia magna.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The chronic toxicity of glutaraldehyde 50% to Daphnia magna was determined according to EU Directive XI/681/86 (BASF AG 93/0406/51/2). Daphnids were exposed to distinct glutaraldehyde concentrations for 21 days under semi-static conditions. Glutaraldehyde was monitored for its effect on mortality and reproduction to Daphnia magna at nominal concentrations of 0, 0.039, 0.078, 0.156, 0.313, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg/L. Glutaraldehyde showed no significant effects on reproduction or parent mortality at a test concentration of 10 mg/L. Since the mortality rate of the parent control animals was < 20% and the mean number of live offspring produced per parent control animal was > 60%, the test can be considered as valid. Concerning the concentration / toxicity relationship there was a steep slope between 10 and 20 mg/L glutaraldehyde. A NOAEL value of 10 mg/L was reported; referring to the active ingredient, the NOAEL is 5 mg a.i./L.
