First-aid measures

- Immediate medical assistance required: yes.

- Skin contact: take off immediately all contaminated clothing. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. May cause delayed burns. Seek medical advice.

- Eye contact: in case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

- Inhalation: remove to fresh air. If breating is difficult, give oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably mouth to mouth. Seek medical advice.

- Ingestion: do not induce vomiting.

- Emergency equipment: provide wash facilities for eyes and skin near work area.

Fire-fighting measures

- Suitable extinguishing media: carbon dioxide, dry chemicals, foam, water spray (mist). Immediately cool containers with water spray. Use media appropriate for surrounding fire.

- Unsuitable: -

- Exposure hazards: high temperatures may liberate toxic or corrosive gases. Do not breathe fumes/vapours. Risk of explosion if heated under confinement.

- Protective equipment for fire-fighters: self contained breathing apparatus. Wear suitable protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

- Personal precautions: evacuate unnecessary personnel. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep upwind.

- Environmental precautions: contain any spill with dikes or absorbents to prevent migration and entry into sewers or streams. Knock down vapour cloud with spray of water or other appropriate solution.

- Methods for cleaning up: pump up the acid water coming from the gaz scrubber into a container properly labelled and acid-resistant. If it is not possible to recover the dilute acid resulting from water-spays or curtains, or if the pools are too small, neutralize with lime or sodium carbonate. Residue  may be washed down with water.

Handling and storage

- Handling: should always be handled in a closed system. When using do not eat or drink. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

- Storage: store in dry, cool, well-ventilated area. Mechanical ventilation is recommended. Local ventilation is needed at bulk vessel openings.

- Eye protection: chemical goggles.

- Hands protection: use neoprene or rubber gloves.

- Respiratory protection: full facepiece approved respirator fitted with an organic vapour canister.

Stability and reactivity

- Stability: stable under normal conditions of use.

- Conditions to avoid: keep away from heat.

- Materials to avoid: avoid contact with oxidizing agents and metals. Avoid strong bases. Avoid nitric acid, chlorates, chromates, carbides, metals and metal salts.

- Hazardous (thermal) decomposition products: bromine.

Disposal considerations

- Dispose in a safe manner in accordance with local/national regulations, after neutralization (pH between 5.5 and 8.5 inclusive).

- Incinerate contaminated materials at an authorised installation.
