Description of key information

Short-term fish:

A key study on the test item showed no toxic effects on fish, resp. mortal effects on fish: EC50 > 100 mg/, resp. NOEC >= 100 mg/L (96h)

Short-term aquatic invertebrates:

Up to a nominal loading of 100 mg/L Silicic acid Aluminium Magnesium Sodium Salt showed no toxicity to aquatic invertebrates like Daphnia magna.

Long-term aquatic invertebrates:

In an experimental key study with Silicic acid aluminium magnesium sodium salt a 21-d NOEC value for Daphnia magna of 100 mg/L resp. LOEC > 100 mg/L (nominal, eluate) was revealed. Also there was no significant effect on the reproduction rate. As the test material is identically to the substance in chapter 1 this value was chosen as key value for chemical safety assessment.

Algae:

Silicic acid Aluminium Magnesium Sodium Salt showed no significant inhibition of algal growth up to concentrations of 100 mg/L (nominal).

Microorganisms:

Silicic acid Aluminium Magnesium Sodium Salt did not inhibit respiration of activated sludge significantly.

Additional information

Concerning aquatic short-term toxicity effects, tests for representatives of each trophic level (fish, Daphnia, algae) are available. The test results with Silicic acid, aluminium magnesium sodium salt and structurally related compounds presented hereby confirmed that the toxicity profile of Silicic acid, aluminium magnesium sodium salt for aquatic species is of low concern. EC50 values of sensitive species like daphnids and algae are above 100 mg/L (nominal load), which is far higher than solubility of substance in water.

 

Long-term toxicity (21d) data is available for daphnids with Silicic acid, aluminium magnesium sodium salt. The NOEC was 100 mg/L (nominal load), the LOEC and the EC50 were > 1000 mg/L (nominal load). A study on chronic toxicity to fish has not been conducted due to the low acute toxicity and animal welfare reasons.
