Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The requirement to conduct a log Kow study for the substance as a whole was waived because there are sufficient data for the constituents. The substance is expected to dissociate to citrate, iron and ammonium in the environment. Log Kow is not relevant for iron and ammonium ions as they are inorganics.

A number of studies are available that indicate that citric acid/citrate has a low log Kow. Secondary sources to which reliability could not be assigned gave values of -1.64 and -1.76. Reliable studies conducted according to generally accepted scientific principles gave values in the range -1.6 to -1.8 (Kuban 1991), and -0.76±0.10 for H2A- and -0.21±0.11 for H3A were determined (Avdeef 1992). There is some variation in the results but this is not considered critical for a substance with very low log Kow. No information on pH is given in the sources
