Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The effect of the test substance on the growth of Pseudoldrchneriella subcapitata was assessed according to OECD Test Guideline 201.  The effective loading rate was assessed a 96-Hour period. The Effective Loading Rate that reduced biomass by 50 % (EbL50) was 0.13 mg/L loading rate WAF.  The Effective Loading Rate that reduced growth rate by 50 % (ErL50) was 0.17 mg/L loading rate WAF. The No Observed Effect Loading rate at 96 hours was 0.050 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Additional information

A modification of the standard method for the preparation of aqueous media was performed in view of the difficulties associated with the evaluation of aquatic toxicity of poorly soluble test materials. The organisms were exposed to a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of the test material, which is an approach endorsed by Regulatory Authorities in the EU and elsewhere when the test material is a complex mixture and poorly soluble in water and the auxiliary solvents and surfactants. Exposure is expressed in terms of the original concentration of test material in water at the start of the mixing period (loading rate) irrespective of the actual concentration of test material in the WAF.

Observations of the cultures microscopically at 96 hours showed that at some concentrations no intact algal cells were observed, although lower concentrations and the control showed no abnormalities. A regrowth experiment was performed after 96 hours exposure to determine whether the algicidal or algistatic effect of the test material. Fresh culture medium was added to ensure that the test concentrations were reduced to below the inhibiting level. Regrowth occurred in all loading rate WAF cultures indicating that the test material was algistatic in effect.
