Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Isobutyl-R-lactate does not dissociate within the pH range prescribed by OECD test guideline 112.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The determination of the dissociation constant in water was not successful because the sample material does not dissociate within the range of validity of the OECD method. This result is in accordance to the literature (A. M. N. Silva, X. Kong and R. C. Hider, BioMetals 2009, 22(5), 771–778): The pKa value of the hydroxyl function in free lactic acid was found to be 15.1 and it can be assumed that the dissociation potential is further reduced in the esterificated compound (resulting in even higher pKa values).
