Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
particle size distribution (granulometry)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From FEB-2010 to MAR-2010
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: European Commission, Directorate General JRC, Joint Research Centre. Particle size distribution, fibre length and diameter distribution. Draft guidance document EUR 20268 EN (2002)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: European Commission, Directorate General XII-JRC, Science, Research and Development - Joint Research Centre. Particle size distribution, fibre length and diameter distribution. Guidance document ECB/TM/1996
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
sieving
Type of distribution:
counted distribution
Percentile:
D50
Mean:
4.7 mm
Remarks on result:
other: This result is issued from the image analysis on crude flakes.

Image analysis:

As indicated above, the D50 issued from image analysis on crude flakes is 4.7 mm.

Sieving analysis:

The sieving analysis reveals that more than 97 % of the particle mass have a size larger than 1 mm. By contrast, less than 0.1 % (0.08 %) of the particle mass presents size smaller than 100 µm.

Laser diffraction analysis:

The laser diffraction analysis performed on the fraction of fine particles with size < 100 µm (0.08 % of the particle mass) gave a D50 of 93 µm.

Conclusions:
Using image analysis, a D50 of 4.7 mm was determined for dicarboxylic acids flakes.
Executive summary:

The particle size distribution of dicarboxylic acids was investigated using different methodologies. At first, image analysis was directly conducted on crude flakes. Sieving analysis was then performed to determine the percentage of particle mass showing a size inferior to 100 µm. Finally, laser diffraction analysis was carried out on this small fraction of fine particles presenting a size inferior to 100 µm.

Image analysis revealed that crude flakes of dicarboxylic acids present a D50 of 4.7 mm. Sieving analysis indicated that less than 0.1 % (0.08 %) of the particle mass show a size inferior to 100 µm. Using laser diffraction on this small fraction of fine particles, a D50 of 93 µm was reported.
