Description of key information

1) Short-term toxicity to fish

Medaka (Oryzias latipes) were exposed to Allyl alcohol under at nominal concentrations of 0, 0.32, 0.56, 0.68, 0.82 and 1.0 mg/L for 96 hours under semi-static conditions: LC50 (96h) = 0,59 mg/L.

2) Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Daphnia magna were exposed to Allyl alcohol for 48 hours under semistatic conditions. Actual concentrations tested were not provided. EC50 (48h) = 2.05 mg/L.

3) Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

In a 21-day chronic study, Daphnia magna wee exposed to nominal concentrations of 0.046, 0.10, 0.22, 0.46, 1.0, and 2.2 mg/L Allyl alcohol (measured: 0.031, 0.091, 0.210, 0.436, 0.919 and 2.02 mg/L) under semi-static conditions. All of the organisms exposed to the highest concentration died. NOEC (21d) = 0.919 mg/L.

4) Toxicity to aquatic algae

- EC50 (72 h) for Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata): 6.09 mg/L (biomass), > 9.69 mg/L (growth rate)

- NOEC (72 h) for Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata): 4.41 mg/L (biomass), 9.69 mg/L (growth rate)

Additional information

Acute toxicitiy of Allyl alcohol to the aquatic environment (fish/daphnia/algae): very toxic, whereby the most sensitive species was fish with a LC50 (96h) of 0,59 mg/L.

According to CLP classification criteria, the substance meets the criteria for classification and labelling for this endpoint, as set out in Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: Aquatic Acute 1; H400: Very toxic to aquatic life.

The CLP classification is in accordance with the one listed for Allyl alcohol in Annex VI (EC No. 1272/2008).

Chronic toxicity of Allyl alcohol to Daphnia magna: NOEC 21-d (semi-static) = 0.92 mg/L.

According to CLP classification criteria, the substance meets the criteria for classification and labelling for this endpoint, as set out in Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008: Aquatic Chronic 3; H412: Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

The CLP classification is an additional classification that is not listed for Allyl alcohol in Annex VI (EC No. 1272/2008).
