Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hydrolysis is relatively slow and not expected to be an important process in the abiotic degradation of chloromethane.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hydrolysis of chloromethane in water is relatively slow with a half- of about 1.1 years at pH 7 and 25 °C (Mabey and Mill, 1978). Hydrolysis of chloromethane under mildly acidic and neutral conditions is essentially negligible. Under basic conditions at pH = 11, hydrolysis apparently takes place - albeit at a slow rate - yielding methanol as a transformation product.

Therefore, hydrolysis is not expected to play an important role in the abiotic degradation of chloromethane, nor has any considerable effect on the stability of the test substance during the aquatic toxicity studies performed with the substance.
