Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

PBT Assessment

The PBT Assessment is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2014).

Persistence (P) Assessment:

The substance is readily biodegradable. Therefore, the substance is not expected to be persistent in the environment and it does not meet the Persistent (P) or very Persistent (vP) criteria.

Bioaccumulation (B) Assessment:

Due to the low log Kow for chloromethane of 0.91, a low potential for bioconcentration is assumed. and will not accumulate to significant levels in aquatic organisms. This is supported by the low calculated BCF value of 3.16 L/kg (regression-based method). Based on the available information, the substance does not meet the B or vB criteria.

Toxicity (T) Assessment:

Environmental toxicity:

Data on the acute toxicity of chloromethane to aquatic organisms indicate a relatively low toxicity of the substance.

Toxicity:

Chloromethane is proposed as toxic for reproduction (DSD: category 3; CLP: category 2) and there is evidence of chronic toxicity, as identified by the classification STOT RE category 2 and Xn, R48 according to Regulation EC No 1272/2008 (CLP) and Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD), respectively. Thus, chloromethane meets the toxicity criteria (T) based on mammalian effects.
