Description of key information

According to column 2 of the table given in REACH Annex VII, the study on density determination can get waived as target substance titanium oxychloride is a reactive chemical intermediate which is only stable in aqueous solution at low pH. Relative density of the solution containing titanium oxychloride was reported by three company MSDS in the range of 1.4 - 1.6, which is higher than the density of the medium hydrochloric acid 20%.

Additional information

According to column 2 of the table given in REACH Annex VII, the study on density determination can get waived if the substance only is stable in a specific medium and the density of the solution is approximately the same as the density of the medium. This is deemed to be the case, as target substance titanium oxychloride is a reactive chemical intermediate which is only stable in aqueous solution at low pH.

A density value of 1.6 kg/dm³ is reported at 20 °C in a company MSDS (Millennium Inorganic Chemicals 2007) and also an approximate value of 1.4 to 1.55 for specific gravity value is reported in a company MSDS (KRONOS 2007, DuPont 2005). The measured density will be related to the concentration of titanium oxychloride together with hydrochloric acid and will vary as a function of concentration. Still, in this case the company MSDS data are considered as reliable, as they coherently report the relative density of the substance in the range 1.4 - 1.6.

The relative density of medium hydrochloric acid 20% is reported to be ca. 1.1. Therefore, in conclusion the relative density of the solution containing target compound titanium oxychloride of ca. 1.5 is higher than the density of the medium hydrchloric acid of ca. 1.1.
