Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information
Reaction Products of C3 alcohols and C3 alkenes obtained as by-products from the manufacture of propan-2-ol by hydration of propylene is not readily biodegradable. However, based on a screening assessment none of the substance constituents are considered to be persistent.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Reaction Products of C3 alcohols and C3 alkenes obtained as by-products from the manufacture of propan-2-ol by hydration of propylene was found to be not readily biodegradable in an OECD 301 headspace test, although it should be recognized that standard biodegradation methods are of limited value for volatile and complex streams. Given the result of the OECD 301 screening study for the whole stream, Reaction Products of C3 alcohols and C3 alkenes obtained as by-products from the manufacture of propan-2-ol by hydration of propylene, cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable.
In addition, a QSAR assessment of representative constituents of the substance was carried out for the purposes of PBT assessment, using the US EPA's BIOWIN model (v.4.10). Predictions were determined for each representative constituent of the substance using BIOWIN 2, BIOWIN 3 and BIOWIN 6 and persistence potential was determined based on a combination of the model results (Persistent if: BIOWIN 2 <0.5 AND BIOWIN 3 <2.25 or BIOWIN 6 <0.5 AND BIOWIN 3 <2.25), following ECHA guidance. None of the constituents were considered to be persistent based on these criteria. The hydrocarbon constituents within the substance were also assessed using the US EPA's BIOHCWIN model (v.1.01). The model provides a half-life value that can be compared against the persistence criteria, although as it is a QSAR prediction this is still considered to be a screening assessment (Persistent if: half-life >40 days). All of the constituents for which the model was suitable were found to be not persistent except for cyclohexane (half-life: 55.38). BIOWIN results are used ahead of the BIOHCWIN results as the use of BIOWIN to assess persistence is cited in the ECHA guidance document R11a: PBT / vPvB assessment (version 3.0, June 2017) and it is therefore considered to be unlikely that this constituent is persistent. In addition, cyclohexane is concluded as not persistent in the registration dossier for the substance itself.
