Additional information

White liquor is an aqueous alkaline solution of inorganic cooking chemicals in kraft or soda pulping process. The source materials for White liquor are sodium salts of green liquor and calcium oxide.

White liquor is a UVCB substance with a variable composition. Therefore the physical and chemical properties are also variable.

The physical and chemical properties of a representative White liquor sample were tested in a GLP laboratory during 2009 -2010. The dry solids content of the tested sample was 17% by weight (83% water). The endpoint for which additional supporting data was available in the literature was density and corrosivity to metals. For the other endpoints no data was found through extensive literature searches.

Additionally the practical experience from the manufacturers and the testing laboratory was utilized in estimation of the physicochemical properties of White liquor.

Justifications for data waiving are given for the endpoints:

- Particle size distribution (granulometry),

- Partition coefficient

- Water solubility,

- Surface tension,

- Flash point,

- Auto flammability,

- Flammability,

- Explosiveness and

- Oxidising properties.

White liquor was not:

- Explosive,

- Flammable,

- Pyrophoric,

- Self-heating or

- Oxidising.

Proposed classification derived from the physical and chemical properties of White liquor is:

Corrosive to metals, category 1 (H290)
