Description of key information

FAT 40841/A TE is not explosive according to the criteria given in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Reactive Groups

The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates no risk of rapid decomposition. FAT 40841/A TE does not contain any of the structural features mentioned in the UN Recommendations. The occurrence of other chemical groups associated with explosive properties as described in the literature was also considered. No such groups were present. The halogen atoms are only linked directly to Carbon atoms and therefore do not indicate explosive properties.

Oxygen Balance

The oxygen balance can only be estimated roughly based on the equation given in the UN Recommendations as FAT 40841/A TE contains other elements than CHO. Taking these three elements into consideration, the oxygen balance is calculated to be -172.5, which is above -200. But the oxygen balance is not relevant because the molecule contains a large number of nitrogen and sulphur atoms.

Calorimetric Tests

The exothermic decomposition energy was determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry in a closed, gold plated high pressure vessel (DSC). The calorimetric test is of special importance for the evaluation of compounds containing chemical groups associated with explosive properties (see "Reactive Groups"). No sharp peaks were observed. Three flat peaks were detected between room temperature and 500 °C. The total of their decomposition energy (ΔHDec determined between room temperature and 500 °C) was found to be about 205.34 J/g, thus being significantly below the UN limit of 500 J/g. The onset point of the first exothermic peak was at about 124 °C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Applying the internationally recognised UN Recommendation criteria, FAT 40841/A TE is not to be classified as explosive material and no experimental determination according to EC test guideline A.14 has to be performed.

It can be concluded beyond reasonable doubt, that FAT 40841/A TE is not a potential explosive and does not have a potential for rapid energy release.
