Description of key information

Log Kow of cyclohexylidenebis[tert-amyl] peroxide has been determined to be 7.26.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
7.26

Additional information

Octanol-water partition coefficient of cyclohexylidenebis[tert-amyl] peroxide has been determined according to OECD TG 117 and GLP requirements (Chastenet, 2017). Seven reference substances were used to calibrate the UPLC system. The partition coefficient log Kow of the test item is >6.5 as its retention time was higher than the last eluting standard (DDT). Therefore an accurate value of log Kow could not be given but the log Kow value of 1,1-di(tert-amylperoxy)cyclohexane could be extrapolated as log Kow = 7.1.

Moreover, KOWWIN gives a Log Kow value of 7.26 for cyclohexylidenebis[tert-amyl] peroxide which is very close to this extrapolated value. Therefore, this last value can be used as a key value of Log Kow. Indeed, no experimental method can be used for the substances with very high Log Kow values and the environmental models are often less sensitive and predictive in this Log Kow range. Therefore, the impact of errors on model predictions for high values of Log Kow is less critical.

In addition, an OECD TG 117 has been carried out for an analogous substance, 1,1 -bis(tert-butylperoxy)cyclohexane. As observed for cyclohexylidenebis[tert-amyl] peroxide, the retention time was higher than the last eluting standard (DDT).
