Description of key information

The available data on similar substances and the available weight of evidence demonstrate that hydrocarbons C13-C20, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, 40-60% aromatics are highly unlikely to be carcinogenic and are not classifiable as carcinogens.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data do not warrant the classification as a carcinogen under the new Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP) or under the Directive 67/518/EEC for dangerous substances and Directive 1999/45/EC for preparations.

Additional information

There are no reliable carcinogenicity studies for C13-C20 n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, 40-60% aromatics or for similar substances. However, there are some mechanistic studies on similar substances which assessed the impact of skin irritation on possible tumour formation after repeated dermal exposure (CONCAWE, 1991, ANON, 1987, Craig et al., 1999). These studies failed to show a tumour initiating property of the test material in the absence of chronic skin irritation. Nonetheless, these studies are flagged as disregarded study since they give information on a possible mechanism of carcinogenicity but are not sufficient to cover this endpoint. The available weight of evidence as described in the waiving statement as well as the available mechanistic data on similar substances demonstrate that hydrocarbons C13-C20, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, 40-60% aromatics are highly unlikely to be carcinogenic and are not classifiable as carcinogens.
